SEO H1 hierarchy

Question: SEO RELATED

As an SEO practice, to avoid <H> tags above the H1, we are using the “Info Box” module instead of the “Smart Heading” module for Logo and Hero content in all pages. For example: If we use the Heading module for Logo, the HTML tag will be H2/H6, but as per SEO the first <H> tag on a page should be H1 (Which we are placing at content section below the hero section). So, can you please guide us, whether to follow SEO standards or Module priority. Please let us know if you need more information. Thank you.

Answer:

H tags CAN be used above an H1. An H1 tag does NOT need to be the first H tag on the page. I realize we had that listed in our SEO Best Practices page on styleguide, this has been updated to reflect the correct information. Thank you for pointing this out to us. Please ensure anything that appears to be a heading is actually using an H tag moving forward, including the business name if this is in place.
